Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program

fresh produce in basket

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program began the spring of 2015 and provides fresh, locally grown food to individuals with chronic illness, and those with low access to grocery stores/healthy food. Individuals with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and/or weight issues qualify to receive a fruit and vegetable prescription. Siouxland Community Health Center is currently the only clinic offering fruit and vegetable prescriptions and once patients receive the prescription, it is redeemed at the clinic before leaving.  Each prescription recipient receives information on Iowa Farm Fresh Products, My Plate recommended serving size, and daily amounts for a healthy diet.
